HORNSEA LEARN LESSONS FROM HEAVY DEFEAT
Hornsea’s seven match unbeaten record was blown away last week, as they came crashing back down to
earth, following a 54 points to 3 crushing defeat against local rivals Hullensians. The defeat saw the
Hollismen remain in third place in Yorkshire Division Four, but they are now two points behind second
placed Old Otliensians who defeated Wetherby. Hornsea’s solitary points came from the boot of Rich
Hellstrom, which was virtually the only positive to come out of the game.
Hornsea player coach Mark Newby, following the defeat, has urged his side to forget about their
Hullensians drubbing and focus on their next league game on Saturday 11th November at home to
Knaresborough. Newby said, “ Last week has now gone and we have now got to look forward to the
challenge of playing Knaresborough, which is going to be a big game for us, as we need to bounce back
straight away following our heavy defeat against Hullensians. Loosing three experienced forwards prior to
the game in Matt Havler, Steve Boddy and Rob Porter did not help us, but I do not want to take anything
away from Hullensians, as they looked a class act. Hullensians have now won all of their seven league
games to date, and I cannot really see them loosing so it is not the end of the world that we have lost to
them. My aim for us at the beginning of the season was to look for a mid table finish which I am confident
we will achieve, lets not forget we are currently lying in third place, which following last season is a big
improvement. We will learn our lessons from the defeat and look at further ways to improve our game in
training, but the Hullensians game is now in the past and we must now look forward to the rest of our
season.”
Speaking shortly after the game Hornsea captain Steve Crook said, “ On the whole, we weren't good
enough especially against a quality side who had five or six players with North Division One experience.
When we had the ball in our hands, we were mostly going backwards, but when Hullensians got in behind
us we really struggled. In the second half we completely lost our shape due to positional changes and
heads going down, and we actually finished the game with only thirteen players due to various injuries.
That game is now gone so now it is very important we show our bouncebackability credentials by getting a
win next week against Knaresborough.”
Players and members are reminded that Saturday 11th November is the annual Captain’s Night event with
all being welcome for a night of revelry.
