HORNSEA’S UNBEATEN START CONTINUES
Hornsea’s unbeaten start to their league campaign continued last Saturday, as they recorded a hard
fought 22 points all scoreline away from home at fellow undefeated side Hemsworth. The victory saw the
Hollismen move up one place to third in Yorkshire Division Four, which is the highest they have been in the
league structure for some time. Hornsea’s points came from a try each for Martyn Pace, Steve Crook, Matt
Havler and Max Clark with Rich Hellstrom adding one conversion.
Hornsea assistant coach Kim Baish was pleased his side had remained undefeated, but felt it was a game
that should have been won, and said, “ We were by far the better side last week but we failed to kill the
game off and therefore had to settle for the draw. Hemsworth play a very tight game due to them probably
having the heaviest pack in the league, and all of their points came from their pack driving over from close
to our line. We played a much more expansive game than our opponents with all four of our trys coming
from open play, but we need to look at ways to defend a rolling maul when close to our line”.
Hornsea captain Matt Havler was generally pleased with his side’s draw, and said, “ We spoke before the
game about needing to play the game at a fast tempo, as we thought the Hemsworth pack would tire in the
last quarter, but credit to them, they kept on going and they actually got the last score of the game. We
hadn’t won at Hemsworth in any of our previous meetings since league rugby was introduced, so I suppose
a draw is not too bad a result, as I think many a side will come unstuck at their place.”
Following the draw being made for the 3rd round of the National EDF Junior Vase, Hornsea find
themselves having an away tie against Yorkshire Division Three side Castleford, on October 13th, who
have had a very impressive start to the season winning their opening four league games finding them top
of the table. Hornsea assistant coach Kim Baish said of the draw, “ Playing a Yorkshire three side will be a
good test for us, and having played Castleford twice last season we know to expect a very tough game,
that said we will go with a gameplan and look to create an upset.
Off the field, club members are reminded that this Saturday, the 6th October, is Vice President’s Day, with
the 1st team entertaining Old Otliensians, kick off 3pm.
