HORNSEA CHARM THE PYTHONS
PONTEFRACT PYTHONS 8 HORNSEA 17
Hornsea progressed to the third round of the National Junior Vase as they defeated a rugged Pontefract
side by 17 points to 8. The game was a scrappy affair with no real fluency due to the constant whistle
blowing by the referee. Hornsea opened the scoring after just five minutes through centre Rob Wells.
Hornsea full back Max Clark made a break before chipping over the defence with Wells on hand to collect
and score. Pontefract bounced back shortly after this with a try following some strong forward play.
Hornsea regained their lead through flanker Sam Clare on the half hour mark, following a break from
centre Steve Crook who put Clare in space who crashed his way over the line, Tom Copeland converted.
Half Time Pontefract Pythons 5 Hornsea 10
The second half was similar to the first half with lots of errors and lots of whistle blowing by the referee. It
was Pontefract who scored first through a penalty following Hornsea being penalised for coming in from the
side. Hornsea substitute Dave Johnson livened up Hornsea following his introduction and it was no
surprise that he was involved in Hornsea’s third try. Matt Havler drove the ball into the Pontefract twenty
two, and when the ball reached the backs a deft kick through by Johnson saw wing Tom Copeland collect
and touch down to give Hornsea a nine point advantage.
This excellent spirited performance saw the Hollismen dig deep in the second half to claim a well deserved
victory and move into the third round of the National Junior Vase, next week the Hollismen return to league
action with an away trip to Hemsworth.
