Hornsea got back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard fought 8 points to 3 victory at the Leeds based
Modernians, which saw the Hollismen complete the league double over their opponents. Playing down the
slope in the first half Hornsea showed their intentions early on as they spun the ball wide with Tom
Copeland, Rich Robinson and Martyn Pace all seeing plenty of ball. The Hollismen opened the scoring
after ten minutes through a try by leading scorer Martyn Pace. Hornsea centre Steve Crook made a
strong break down the middle of the field, the pack then recycled the ball and some crisp handling by Chris
Watkins, Rich Hellstrom and Rob Wells put Pace away who sped to the line to score. Modernians then
converted a penalty with their first flurry into the Hornsea half following an offside decision to bring the
scoreline to 5 - 3 in Hornsea's favour. Hornsea continued to dominate both possession and territory for
the remainder of the half but some resolute home defence kept them at bay, until Rich Hellstrom was
successful with a well struck penalty just before the interval.

Hornsea were always going to find it more difficult in the second half playing up the slope and against the
wind, but they defended as if their lives depended on it time after time. Chris Watkins and Matt Havler
both made some crashing breaks and were both unlucky not to score as Hornsea tried to take the game to
the opposition, but their defence was the key marshalled by Rob Wells in the backs and Danny Morris in
the forwards. The Hollismen played out the final five minutes of the game in a professional manner to gain
the two league points on offer which saw them move up to fifth place in Yorkshire Division Four. Speaking
shortly after the game, Hornsea assistant coach Kim Baish said, " We had been working on playing a
crashing game up the middle all work which seemed to pay off and I am delighted with the win".
