HORNSEA 15 OLD MODERNIANS 0
Hornsea produced a professional performance to dispose of a hard working Modernians side by 15 points
to 0, which saw them move up to fourth place in Yorkshire Division Four. Hornsea had the better of the
early exchanges but they were unable to break through the solid Modernians defence. Hornsea opened
the scoring after 15 minutes through the boot of Rich Hellstrom following a well struck penalty from 30
yards. Modernians were struggling to get into the Hornsea half but they did manage a couple of flurries
into the Hornsea twenty two, but some resolute home defence kept them at bay. Hornsea continued to
dominate the first half territory and possession wise but were unable to finish some chances that went
begging.

The second half was a repeat performance of the first with Hornsea controlling the game but finding the art
of scoring a difficulty. However, they finally broke through the stubborn Modernians defence with fifteen
minutes to go with a try from flanker Mark Newby. Hornsea drove the ball into the Modernians twenty two
with Jonty Ashton and Karl Forbes leading the way, when the ball came to the back of the maul Newby
broke away and raced fifteen metres to score a fine try, Hellstrom converted. In the dying minutes of the
game Chris Watkins, making his home league debut for Hornsea, scored a well earned try as he picked up
from the base of the scrum and crashed his way over the line. This improved performance by Hornsea
impressed assistant coach Kim Baish who said, “ This was our first shut out of the season which was
pleasing as we have been working on our defence in recent training sessions. It is now important that we
gain back to back league wins when we travel to Knaresborough in a fortnight, in the meantime we have a
Silver Trophy game next week at Stocksbridge which we will be looking to start a lengthy cup run”.
